Standard 5 Teachers know how to manage a classroom. The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
Rationale 1: I developed a website for the three courses that I taught last year. In the website, students can find the synopsis for each class. Each synopsis includes units of study and rules of the classroom. Students can also find rubrics for essays assigned in class, links to video clips pertaining to books taught in class, and role sheets for literature circles. This evidence allows students to work both at school and from home. Working on the internet gives the students opportunities to stay motivated to complete assignments and keeps them up-to-date on requirements in my classroom.
KSD: 5.K.5 The teacher recognizes factors and situations that are likely to promote or diminish intrinsic motivation, and knows how to help students become self motivated. Keeping students motivated in today’s technological world can be rewarding and challenging at the same time. Using a website to reach my students increases their motivation levels. If they are doing homework in the evening and have a question, they no longer need to wait until the next day to ask the teacher. My website may be able to answer the question for them. They are then motivated to finish their assignment on time and with full understanding.
5.S.6 The teacher analyzes the classroom environment and makes decisions and adjustments to enhance social relationships, student motivation and engagement, and productive work. The classroom environment is now extended to both the students’ homes and other areas of the school building (like the computer lab.) Having students retrieve information for upcoming assignments from the classroom website increases their motivation, keeps them organized (they no longer are misplacing important papers), and increases their production.
5.D.5 The teacher is committed to continuous development of individual students’ abilities and considers how different motivational strategies are likely to encourage this development for each student. Using a classroom website is a great method to help students of the 21st century develop the skills they will need in their future careers. I am committed to finding more resources to guide them on their journeys. Beyond the use of a website, other options to be implemented in the future are wikispaces and blogs. These two interactive websites will allow students to develop their peer relationships further in an on-line setting.
